How to Get What You Want From Used Car Dealers

Need a reliable automobile? Lacking the affordability to buy new is a precarious position to be in. You may feel sad, desperate or nervous. Approaching used car dealers can be intimidating because the salesperson will likely know more about the vehicles, their pricing and mechanics. They will seem to have the upper hand. But, at the end of the day, both you and the salesperson have one mutual goal: to have you in a car when you leave the lot. Follow this advice and learn how you can use this to your advantage.

Create a Budget and Stick to It

Before you go to one of your local used car dealers, think about the money that you have available to spend. Know what you can afford for both a down payment and a monthly amount you feel comfortable with paying for financing. Work out any future payments that you will have to make in addition to the monthly payment for the vehicle. Once you have figured out your budget, stick to it. If you walk into the dealership with a firm number in mind, you will be better able to bargain with the salesperson. Figure out the numbers, and don't budge.

Make a "Must-Have" List

When you buy an automobile, you have so many options. Before you visit the dealer, identify which options are "musts" for you. How many seats do you need? Is a hatchback necessary because of everything you tote around? Are you dead set on getting more than 30 miles a gallon? If you begin your conversation with the salesperson by giving him or her a list of "must-haves," your options will be limited and you will be able to see very quickly whether or not this company has something to offer you. Rather than being talked into buying a car that doesn't meet your needs, you will be able to determine right away if you should leave and visit another lot.

Shop Around

Used car dealers are great because they can offer lower prices. The price of a used car is highly negotiable. Having a clear idea of all your options will empower you to negotiate better. Even though it will require a lot of time and effort, you may find that you get the best price possible if you spend the time comparing the inventory of a number of providers in your area. Armed with your budget and your "must-have" list, you will be able to know what is available to you. Remember, you an always walk away and find another option elsewhere that will meet your budget. Ultimately, the person working to sell you a vehicle will aim to keep your business, and will be more open to negotiating if you stand your ground.

Finally, when working with used car dealers, always be prepared to say no. Practice saying no before shopping so that it will be easier when you are on the lot. If the salesperson is unable to satisfy your firm budget and your must-have list, simply walk off the lot and take your business
